“Was” or “were” ?

This morning, I posted this question on Hello Talk.

FJK:

“Was” or “were” ?

1. A man and his wife was .....
2. A man and his wife were .....
3. There was a man and his wife who ......
4. There were a man and his wife who ....

Here are the comments from people.

Sam :

2 and 3 are correct :)

Jax :

1.A man and his wife WERE
3. There was a man and his wife who. .
There WAS A man ... (+) AND his wife
Hope you understand

FJK :
How about these?
5. A man with his wife was ....
6. A man with his wife were ....

Jax :
5.
Although we wouldn't really use this sentence often. The sentence is describing the man ( who is with his wife ).
I think we would normally say "a man was ..... with his wife "

Thank you very much, Sam and Jax!
