The Language Cafe

Once upon a time, there was a cafe at which customers enjoyed language exchange between Martian and Venusian languages. The cafe had some guidelines: 

This group was not a language school. No one was hired as a teacher or an instructor. 

No one was a specialist on grammar or intonation. 

No one should request a specific individual to correct his or her pronunciation or sentences.

Anyone could ask the group for help, though. 

Then, someone could help the person if he or she would feel like it. 

Everyone was here to practice Martian or Venusian. 

Most of customers understood the guidelines.

One day, a new male customer came to the cafe. His name was Tom, and he was from the Mars. He had just began learning Venusian, so he somehow got information about the cafe. He introduced himself to the group, then found a beautiful young Venusian girl. Her name was Ellen. He came next to her, and showed his Venusian textbook and his notebook. He said to Ellen, "Can you check my writings on this notebook? Also, please check my pronunciation and intonation with my Venusian." Ellen felt uncomfortable with his requests but could not say "No." Tom thought that Ellen was okay with him, then kept talking to her.

The next day, Ellen did not come to the cafe. Some regular customers were worried about her, so someone talked about it to the owner. Then, the owner talked to Tom outside. Tom was unhappy about it, then began to argue with the owner. The owner said that he would not have time to argue with Tom. Tom left the cafe and no longer showed up.

A week later, Ellen came back to the cafe. People in the cafe were very happy to see her. They enjoyed chatting and exchanging their languages ever after.

ある日、新しい男性客がカフェにやってきた。彼はトムと言う名前で火星出身であった。彼は金星語を習い始めたばかりで、そして、そのカフェの情報をどこかで得ていた。彼はグループに自己紹介して、そして、若くて美しい金星人の女の子を見つけた。彼女の名前はエレンだった。

彼は彼女の隣にきて、自分の金星語の教科書とノートを見せた。彼がエレンに言った。「このノートに私が書いたのをチェックしてもらえませんか？それに、私の金星語の発音とイントネーションもチェックしてください。」エレンは彼の要求を不快に感じたが、「ノー」と言えなかった。トムはエレンは自分とは上手く行っていると思って彼女に話し続けた。

翌日、エレンはカフェに来なかった。何人かの常連客達は彼女のことを心配して、オーナーにそのことを話した。それで、オーナーが外でトムに話した。トムはそれについて不満で、オーナーと議論し始めた。オーナーは、トムと議論している暇は無いと言った。トムはカフェを去り、二度と現れなかった。

一週間後、エレンがカフェに戻って来た。カフェの人々は彼女を見て喜んだ。それからずっと、彼らは会話や言語交換を楽しんだ。

Ellen felt uncomfortable with his requests but could not say "No."

行っている (いっている) : It's going.

上手く行っている : You are doing well.

自分とはうまく行っている : Someone is doing well with you.

思った (おもった) : You thought.

トムは思った : Tom thought.

トムはエレンは自分とは上手く行っていると思った : Tom thought that Ellen was okay with him. ("自分" is Tom in this context.)

話 (はなし) : a story

話す (はなす) : to talk, to speak (verb)

続ける (つずける) : to continue, to keep doing something (verb)

話し続ける : to keep talking/speaking (verb)

続けた (つずけた) : You continued. You kept doing it.

トムは話し続けた : Tom kept talking.

彼女に話し続けた : You kept talking to her.

トムは彼女に話し続けた : Tom kept talking to her.

トムは上手く行っていると思って話し続けた : Tom kept talking, thinking he was doing well.

The next day, Ellen did not come to the cafe.

Some regular customers were worried about her, so someone talked about it to the owner.

外 (そと) : outside

外で話した : You talked outside.

トムに話した : You talked to Tom.

Tom was unhappy about it, then began to argue with the owner. 

トムはそれについて不満で、オーナーと議論し始めた。

し始める : to begin to do something (verb)

始めた (はじめた) : You began it.

トムは始めた : Tom began it.

し始めた : You began doing it.

議論し始めた : You began arguing.

オーナーと議論し始めた : You began arguing with the owner.

The owner said that he would not have time to argue with Tom. 

オーナーは、トムと議論している暇は無いと言った。

議論している (ぎろんしている) : You are arguing.

オーナーは議論している : The owner is arguing.

トムと議論している : You are arguing with Tom.

暇 (ひま) : free time, extra time

議論している暇 : time to argue

無い (ない) : It is not here/there. You don't have it.

暇は無い : You don't have time.

議論している暇は無い : You don't have time to argue.

トムと議論している暇は無い : You don't have time to argue with Tom.

言った (いった) : You said.

オーナーは言った : The owner said.

オーナーは、無いと言った : The owner said that he would not have it.

オーナーは、暇は無いと言った : The owner said that he would not have time.

議論している暇は無いと言った : You said that you would not have time to argue.

Tom left the cafe and no longer showed up.
トムはカフェを去り、二度と現れなかった。

去る (さる) : to leave, to go away (verb)

去った (さった) : You left.

トムは去った : Tom left.

カフェを去った : You left the cafe.

去り、.... : You leave/left here/there and/then/so .......

二度 (にど) : twice

なかった : Such a thing was not here/there.

二度と....ない/なかった : no longer ....... (It didn't happen twice. You didn't do it twice.)

現れる (あらわれる) : to show up, to appear (verb)

現れた : You showed up.

現れなかった : You didn't show up.

トムは現れなかった : Tom didn't show up.

二度と現れなかった : You no longer showed up.

A week later, Ellen came back to the cafe. 

一週間後、エレンがカフェに戻って来た。

一週間 / １週間 (いっしゅうかん) : one week

後 (ご/のち) : after, later

戻る (もどる) : to return (verb)

戻った (もどった) : You returned.

来た (きた) : You came.

戻って来る : to come back (verb)

エレンが戻って来る : Ellen comes back.

カフェに戻って来る : You come back to the cafe.

戻って来た : You came back.

一週間後戻ってきた : A week later, you came back.

People in the cafe were very happy to see her.
