2020年春、日本で、ある危険なウィルスが、全国に蔓延した。ウィルスの学術名は、コゥヴィッド・ナインティーンであったが、人々は、コロナウイルスと呼んでいた。
ここに、あるひとりの男が居た。彼はマスク不使用でバスの車内でくしゃみをした廉で警察に逮捕された。彼の名はカルロス、火星からの移民であった。カルロスは、あるロボットの会社で主任エンジニアをしていた。
彼は、妻キャロルと暮らしていた。彼女は金星からの移民であった。彼らは、共通言語として英語を使っていた。二人共、日本語は少ししか喋れなかった。カルロスは、花粉や埃、冷気、犬、等々、多くのものに対してアレルギーが有った。彼は、自分は周りの全てのものにアレルギーであるように感じていた。キャロルは、彼のことが心配で仕方が無かった。
彼は、マスクを買おうとして探し求めたが、街中どの店にも置いていなかった。それで仕方なく口にはハンカチを当てることにした。彼はバスの中でなるべくくしゃみをしないように最大限努力した。しかし、鼻の中の不快感が増すにつれて、やがて彼は数回くしゃみをし始めた。
「弁護士を呼びたい！」カルロスが叫んだ。警察官が言った。「いや、駄目だ！」カルロスが言った。「通訳も要る！日本語はうまく話せないよ！」警察官が答えた。「だめ！」もうひとりの警官が緊急ボタンを押した者に向かってウィンクをした。「よくやった！」彼らはカルロスを署まで連行し留置所に入れた。
一人の男が社長の隣に座っていたが、それはバスで非常ボタンを押した人物であった。彼の名前は東條であった。アナウンスの後、そのCEOが彼に言った。「君が次のチーフ・エンジニアだよ。」東條が応えた。「ありがとうございます。」
彼は、マスクを買おうとして探し求めたが、街中どの店にも置いていなかった。それで仕方なく口にはハンカチを当てることにした。彼はバスの中でなるべくくしゃみをしないように最大限努力した。しかし、鼻の中の不快感が増すにつれて、やがて彼は数回くしゃみをし始めた。
誰かが緊急ボタンを押した。運転手は直ちに車両を停止した。バスの後方には既にパトカーが来ていた。二人の警察官がバスに乗り込み、バスの運転手と話すこともなく、いきなりカルロスを逮捕した。
キャロルはテレビでニュースを見て驚いた。それは、彼女の夫がバスの中でウィルスを撒き散らして逮捕されたと言うことを報道していた。彼女はショックを受けた。「違う！彼は感染なんかしていないわ！それは、ただのアレルギーよ！」彼女は、タクシーを拾って警察署に行き、カルロスとの面会を要求した。 しかし、その要求は拒否された。 警察官が彼女に言った。「面会は一切出来ないので、帰って下さい！」
テレビのニュースでは、ロボットの会社のCEOがアナウンスを行い、「カルロスが、自らがコロナウイルスに感染しているにもかかわらず、意図的にウィルスを撒き散らすために、バスに乗り込んだ。」と述べた。
一人の男が社長の隣に座っていたが、それはバスで非常ボタンを押した人物であった。彼の名前は東條であった。アナウンスの後、そのCEOが彼に言った。「君が次のチーフ・エンジニアだよ。」東條が応えた。「ありがとうございます。」
キャロルはカルロスの友人の弁護士に連絡した。 彼女はホテルで記者会見を開いた。彼女は宣言した。「聞いて下さい！これは会社の一部のグループが企てた陰謀なんです！」翌日、大勢の警官たちが彼女の自宅にやってきた。彼らは、カルロスとキャロルのパソコンやパスポート、それから彼女の携帯や書類など、多くの物を押収した。彼女は日本の司法制度に恐れおののいた。火星のニュースレポーターが断言した。 「日本の人質司法制度はクレイジーとしか言いようが無い！」
カルロスの弁護士はキャロルがカルロスに面会出来る様に全力を尽くした。裁判所の警察への命令により、キャロルは、1日2時間のカルロスへの面会が出来ることになった。キャロルはカルロスに面会した。彼女は英語で話始めたが警察官がそれを制止した。「やめなさい！日本語以外は使わないで。わかった？」キャロルが抗議した。「どうして？私たち、日本語は上手く話せないのに。」警察官が言った。「それはこちらの問題では無いよ。それに、面会は一日十分だけですからね。」キャロルが言った。「何ですって？二時間のはずよ！」警官が返事した。「そんな事は聞いていません。え〜っと、もう十分たったから、もう帰りなさい。」
火星と金星の人々は、彼女のメッセージをSNSで共有したが、それは双方の政府にとってプレッシャーになった。火星のドーナッツ・シュリンプ大統領と金星のエマヌエーレ・マカロニ首相はオンラインで話し合った。シュリンプ氏が言った。「我々の特殊部隊が彼らを無事に救出出来れば良いんだけど。でも、このミッションは極秘にやらなければなりません。日本政府と揉めたく無いですからね。」
ある朝、キャロルが川辺を歩いていると、誰かの声が聞こえた。「キャロル、そのまま歩き続けて。火星・金星トラベル・サービスの者です。あなた達を助けに来ました。」彼らは歩きながら小声で話した。キャロルが言った。「ありがとう！切符代は、ビットコインで二十四時間以内に払えると思うわ。」その人物はキャロルから離れて去って行った。キャロルが独り言を言った。「神様、ありがとう！」彼女は弁護士を呼んだ。「夫はいつ保釈されるのですか？」二週間後、カルロスは保釈金五百万ドルで釈放された。彼は、如何なる方法によっても妻との通信をしない様に言い渡された。
深夜零時、小型の黒色の宇宙船が密かに大使館を飛び去った。二機の警察のヘリが宇宙船の前方に現れた。翌朝早く、太平洋で、それらのヘリコプターの部品がいくつか発見された。両方のヘリコプターのパイロットは無事だった。彼らによれば、アマゾンのドローンに救出されたとの事であった。
アマゾン社が声明を出し、会社のドローンが行方不明となり、何者かにハイジャックされた可能性があると述べた。翌日、ドローンは空の大箱を積んで配送センターに戻って来た。
宇宙船の中では、カルロスとキャロルが窓の外を眺めていた。キャロルが言った。「東京を離れるのは寂しいわ。」「僕は今でも日本人が大好きだよ。」とカルロス。彼らのテーブルには、二枚の東京発月行きの片道切符が有った。それらには宇宙船の名前が「アルテミス」と印刷されていた。火星と金星は非公式に月を実効支配していた。
一年後、そのロボットメーカーは最新型ロボットを発表した。その新しいモデル名称は「クーデター」だった。
