Becky - A Classmate Who Had Returned From The United States

Becky - A Classmate Who Had Returned From The United States

Once upon a time, there was a man and his wife who had just returned from the United States to Japan.

They had a thirteen-year-old daughter, and her name was "Rebecca" but they usually called her "Becky."

Her English pronunciations were more natural than that of her parents, and they were also happy about it.

Her father created the environments for all family members, so they could have many chances to read and listen English at home.

First, he contracted with a satellite broadcasting company, so they would be able to watch American TV programs, then next, he purchased a high-performance, short-wave radio in Akihabara, so they could listen to overseas radio programs.

By the way, Becky was transferred to a junior high school near her home.

She was very nervous on the first day of attending her junior high school in Japan.

When the teacher introduced Becky to the class, she also introduced herself.

However, when she pronounced her name and nickname like in American English, several students snickered.

As the class lesson began, Becky actively spoke out, and also talked to the teacher with her American English.

However, the teacher never praised Becky, and after that, kept away from Becky for some reason. Instead, she called only other students to speak.

Another student who sat the seat next to Becky whispered, "You are giving yourself such air. You, ....Tu Vuò Fà L'Americano."

Eventually, those students began making fun of Becky more openly in between classes.

Becky could not make a friend: walked alone when going to her school  and when leaving it, and spent her time in the library alone during the break time between classes, had a sandwich which her mother made for her alone for her lunch. She was lonely.

After a period of time, she eventually stopped speaking like an American and began pronouncing with katakana-English sounds. Her parents were so surprised with her change.

Her parents worried about it and wondered what they should do. However, Becky said, "I'm all right, so don't worry about me," then began speaking in katakana-English more and more.

Since those days, there was also a change in her school life.

The English class teacher also began to call Becky as often as he/she called other students in the class. Also, other students stopped making fun of Becky.

With such a situation, both the teacher and students were able to enjoy their classes with katakana-English.

Becky also made some friends. She was no longer lonely.

Becky enjoyed her days at her junior high school ever after.

Suggestion from Catherine:

However, the teacher never praised Becky, and after that, kept away from Becky for some reason. Instead, she called only other students to speak.
( , instead, --> . Instead, )
