Hashijutsu Episode 4: The Piano Girl

After losing the battle with the fly, I was disheartened and spent days wallowing in despair. Concerned neighbors suggested I attend some events. A family next door gave me a ticket to a piano recital by students of the Ahamay Music School. I thanked them and decided to go.

The first performer was a three-year-old girl. Her hands and fingers were tiny and delicate. She began playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb." To my amazement, she moved her hands and fingers incredibly fast and accurately. Though she made minor mistakes, they were negligible—less than 1% of the performance.

Watching her miraculous technique, I imagined that if she tried, she could catch flies in mid-air with chopsticks. At the end of her performance, I shouted, "Bravo!"

蝿との闘いに敗れた私は、我が箸術にたいする自信を完全に失い、喪失感を感じながら無意味な毎日を過ごしていた。近所の人々は、私の事を心から心配し、何か催しにでも行ってみたらどうかと勧めてくれた。

隣に住む家族は、AHAMAY音楽学校の生徒達のピアノ発表会のチケットをくれた。私は感謝し、そのイベントに足を運んだ。1人目の演奏者は、3歳の女の子で、その手と指はとても小さく華奢に見えた。そして彼女は、「メリーさんの羊」をピアノで弾き始めた。その演奏が始まってすぐに、彼女の手とその指が、信じられない程の速さと正確さで動くのを見て、私はショックを受けた。若干の間違いは有ったが、それは殆ど無視出来る程度で、曲全体から見れば、おそらく1パーセントにもならなかったはずだ。

私は彼女の手と指の動きに見入っていた。それは奇跡という他無かった。わたしはある事を想像していた。もし、彼女が本気を出せば、箸を使って空中で蝿を捕まえる事も出来るかも知れないと。演奏が終わったとき、思わず私は「ブラボー」と叫んだ。

蝿(はえ): a fly

近所の人々は、私の事を心から心配し、何か催しにでも行ってみたらどうかと勧めてくれた。

Some of my neighbors were very worried about me and recommended that I attend some events.

勧める(すすめる): to recommend

勧めてくれた：someone recommended something good to you (so you will probably thank him or her)

A family next door gave me a ticket for a recital in which the students of Ahamay Music School would be performing on the piano.

本気を出す(ほんきをだす): to get serious to do something, to be really willing to do something

使う(つかう): to use, to bring a tool or something into action

箸を使う：to use a pair of chopsticks (in this context)

空中(くうちゅう): the air

空中で(くうちゅうで): in the air (adverb)

蝿(はえ): a fly as an insect

捕まえる(つかまえる): to catch something

箸を使って捕まえる（はしをつかってつかまえる）：to catch it with a pair of chopsticks

事も出来る（こともできる）：you can also do that
