The Silence
Once upon a time, in a depopulated area of Japan, there was a village known as the "Silent Village." The village had been facing an aging population, and its population sharply declined from around the year 2000 to less than 100 people by 2020. Maintaining homes became challenging for elderly households, and upon the village chief's suggestion, they renovated the old school building into a communal living space for everyone. People shared meals and slept in groups within that building. Although the community was self-sufficient in providing meal ingredients, the village chief harbored a certain concern. Conflicts and dissatisfaction arose in the operation of the community and daily life, leading to strained relationships.
One day, a young man named Brother Roger from a rural village in southern France visited the community during his solo journey. He lived with the villagers for a week. Brother Roger, upon hearing from the village chief about the strained relationships among some villagers, proposed a solution. His suggestion was for everyone to gather at the dining table at the same time, receive food in a single file, and observe complete silence during meal preparation, eating, and cleanup until everything was finished. During a lunchtime, the cooking group prepared two sausages, salad, soup, and bread per person. There were four distributors assigned to distribute sausages, salad, soup, and bread, respectively. One of them was a young man, and it was his first time in charge. He was assigned to distribute sausages.
As people lined up with trays carrying plates and bowls, the young man began placing sausages on everyone's plates. He initially gave two sausages to children and four to adults. After a while, he noticed that the number of sausages in the pot was decreasing. Therefore, he started giving only one sausage per person halfway through. Those who received only one sausage stared at the young man. People remained silent, and after the village chief raised his hands and offered a prayer, everyone started eating. Some people glanced at the young man while eating. The lunchtime passed quietly and peacefully. From that day on, there were no more conflicts among the people in the village, and peaceful days continued.

ある時、フランス南部の田舎の村から、ブラザー・ロジェという若い男性が一人旅で共同体を訪れ、一週間、村人たちと共同生活をしました。ブラザー・ロジェは村長から一部の村人たちの仲が良くないことを聞いて、一つの提案をしました。その提案とは、食事の時は全員が同じ時間に食卓を共にし、全員が一列に並んで順番に食べ物を受け取ること。食事の準備、食事中、後片付けが終わるまでは完全な沈黙を守り、いっさい声を出さないこと。ある日の昼食時、調理グループは一人当たりのメニューとして、ソーセージ2本、サラダ、スープ、パンを準備しました。配給係は4人で、それぞれ、ソーセージ、サラダ、スープ、パンを提供していました。その中の一人は若い青年で、配給係はその日が初めて担当しました。彼はソーセージの係を担当することになりました。
人々がお皿とお椀を載せたトレーを持って並び、ソーセージ係の青年は人々のお皿にソーセージを載せていきました。青年は子供のお皿にはソーセージを2本、大人のお皿にはソーセージ4本を載せました。しばらくすると、青年は鍋の中のソーセージの数が少なくなっていることに気がつきました。それで、途中から、一人につきソーセージを一本だけ与え始めました。ソーセージを一本しかもらえなかった人々が青年の方をじっと見ていました。人々は黙って食卓につき、村長が両手を挙げてから合掌し、皆が食べ始めました。一部の人々は食べながらも、青年の方をジロジロと見ていました。昼食のひと時は無事に静かに終わりました。それ以来、村では人々の間で何も争いがなく、平和な日々が続きました。
