Episode 2: A Vital Check

After fighting the giant centipede, my injured index finger required several follow-up visits to the doctor.

One morning at the doctor’s office, a nurse was taking my vitals. "I'm going to check your blood pressure. Please breathe slowly," she said. I stretched out my right arm and grasped my thumb. "Okay, I will."

She read the numbers. "Your blood pressure is 180 over 100."

I smiled. "That’s good!"

She smiled back. "I need to check it one more time. Okay, breathe slowly."

I took a deep breath. "How about now?"

She cocked her head. "Now it's 90 over 60. Something’s wrong."

I replied, "That's good! No problem."

Curious, the nurse asked, "By the way, what have you been doing?"

I answered, "This is 'ibuki.' I'm a Hashijutsu master."

Her eyes widened. "What's that?"

I explained, "It’s a special breathing technique used in some martial arts. I learned it from a friend in a Goju-style Karate dojo. With this technique, I can control my vital condition."

2. バイタルチェック

私は、巨大な百足と闘い、人差し指に深手を負ってしまった。その為、フォローアップも含めて、数回に渡って、医者に通う事になった。

ある朝、医者の所で、看護師が私のバイタルを測定していた。「血圧を測りますので、ゆっくりと呼吸して下さい。」私は右腕を伸ばして、親指を握り締めた。「はい。では。」

彼女が数値を読み上げた。「はい、上が180、下が100です。」私は微笑んだ。「良いですね。」

彼女も微笑んだ。「もういっかい測りますよ。はい、ゆっくり呼吸して下さい。」私は深呼吸した。「今度はどうですか？」

彼女は首を傾げた。「今度は、90と、60、おかしいなぁー。」私は言った。「良いと思いますよ。全然問題無いです。」

看護師が私に尋ねた。「ところで、さっきから何やってるんですか。」私は答えた。「これ、息吹ですよ。私は箸術の師範をしてるんです。」

看護師は目を大きく開いた。「何ですか、それ？」私は説明した。「これは格闘術の特別な呼吸法なんですよ。剛柔流空手をしている友人に教えてもらいました。このテクニックでバイタルの状態もコントロール出来るんですよ。」

私 (わたし) : I / my / me

巨大 (きょだい) : huge / big / giant

百足 (むかで) : a centipede (literally “百”:a hundred, “足”:feet)

巨大な百足 : a giant centipede

闘う (たたかう) : to fight (verb)

闘った。(たたかった) : You fought.

私は闘った。: I fought.

私は百足と闘った。: I fought against a centipede.

私は巨大な百足と闘った。: I fought against a giant centipede.

闘い、.... (たたかい、.....)  : You fought and ......

人差し指 (ひとさしゆび) : an index finger

深手 (ふかで) : a serious injury / wound (noun)

負う (おう) : to carry something heavy / to get a wound (verb)

深手を負う : to be seriously wounded in fighting

負った。(おった) : You carried it. / You got a wound.

深手を負った。: You got injured.

私は深手を負った。: I got injured.

しまう : You will be in such a bad situation. / You will be doing it accidentally/by mistake.

深手を負ってしまう : to get a serious wound when you don’t want to do ite.”)

しまった! : Oops!

してしまった。: You have done something wrong. / You did it accidentally/by mistake.

深手を負ってしまった。: You got injured accidentally/by mistake.

私は、人差し指に深手を負ってしまった。: I got injured on my index finger.

I had to visit my doctor several times for the follow ups. 

その為、フォローアップも含めて、数回に渡って、医者に通う事になった。

渡って (わたって) : through

医者 (いしゃ) : a doctor (casual expression)

通う (かよう) : to go to a same place regularly, usually, often or sometimes (verb)

通った。(かよった) : You went there regularly.

医者に通った。: You visited your doctor regularly.

為 (ため): such a reason / such a purpose

その為  : for such a  reason / for such a purpose / because of it / So, .....

フォローアップ : a follow up / following up (noun)

含める (ふくめる) : to include (verb)

フォローアップも含めて : including the follow ups

数回 (すうかい) : several times

渡る (わたる) : to go over (verb) / to cross (verb)

数回に渡って : through several times

医者に通う : You visit your doctor regularly or several times.

事 (こと) : an event / an issue / a situation

医者に通う事 : visiting your doctor regularly or sometimes

事になる : You will be in such a situation. / You will be doing it. / You will have to do it.

通う事になる : You will have to go there regularly.

医者に通う事になる : You will have to visit your doctor regularly.

医者に通う事になった。: You had to visit your doctor regularly or sometimes.

その為、医者に通う事になった。: So, you had to visit my doctor regularly.

フォローアップも含めて、医者に通う事になった。: You had to visit my doctor for the follow ups.

数回に渡って、医者に通う事になった。: You had to visit my doctor several times.

Example:

画面 (がめん) : the screen

見過ぎる (みすぎる) : to see or watch something too much (verb)

眼科 (がんか) : eye doctor

私は画面を見過ぎて、眼科に通う事になった。: I watched on the screen too much, then I had to visit my eye doctor later.

看護師 (かんごし) : a nurse

測定 (そくてい) : measuring

血圧 (けつあつ) : a blood pressure

測る (はかる) : to measure

言う (いう) : to say (verb)

言った。(いった) : You said.

呼吸 (こきゅう): a breath / breathing

下さい (ください) : Please, do it. Please, give it to me.

バイタルサイン / バイタル : a vital sign

医者の所 : a doctor’s office / a clinic (literally "a doctor's place", casual expression)

医者の所にいる。: You are at the doctor's office.

医者の所にいた。: You were at the doctor's office.

私はいた。: I was here/there.

ある朝、私は医者の所にいた。: One morning, I was at the doctor’s office.

測定する : to measure (verb)

バイタルサインを測定する : to take someone's vital sign (verb)

看護師が測定した。: A nurse measured it.

看護師が測定していた。: A nurse was measuring it.

看護師がバイタルサインを測定していた。: A nurse was taking your vital sign. 

看護師が私のバイタルを測定していた。: A nurse was taking my vital sign.

ある朝、看護師が私のバイタルを測定していた。: One morning, a nurse was taking my vital sign.

医者の所で、看護師が私のバイタルを測定していた。: A nurse was taking my vital sign at the doctor’s office.

ある朝、医者の所で、看護師が私のバイタルを測定していた。: One morning, a nurse was taking my vital sign at the doctor’s office.

呼吸する: to take a breath / to breathe (verb)

測ります。(はかります) : I will measure it.

ゆっくり : slowly

血圧を測ります。:  I'm going to check your blood pressure. 

血圧を測りますので、...... :  I'm going to check your blood pressure. So, ........

呼吸する : to breathe (verb)

して下さい。:  Please do ot.

呼吸して下さい。: Please breathe.

ゆっくりと呼吸して下さい。: Please breathe slowly.

血圧を測りますので、ゆっくりと呼吸して下さい。: I'm going to check your blood pressure. Please breathe slowly.

I stretched my right arm and grasped the thumb, “Okay, I will.” 

私は右腕を伸ばして、親指を握り締めた。「はい。では。」

私 (わたし) : I/my/me

右腕 (みぎうで) : right arm

左腕 (ひだりうで) : left arm

伸ばす (のばす) : to stretch (verb)

伸ばした。: You stretched it.

私は左腕を伸ばした。: I stretched my left arm.

私は右腕を伸ばして、..... : I stretched my right arm and .......

親指 (おやゆび) : thumb

握る (にぎる) : to grasp (verb)

締める (しめる) : to tighten (verb)

握り締める (にぎりしめる) : to grasp something tightly (verb)

私は親指を握り締めた。: I grasped my thumb tightly.

応じた。: You responded. You replied.

応じる(おうじる): to respond (verb)

はい : Yes. / Okay. / Sure. / That’s fine. / I’m listening to you. / Not bad. / Just a voice without a meaning (Please, study the difference between “はい/いいえ” and “yes/no” especially when answering to a negative question such as “You don’t eat pork, do you?” and the answer will be, “はい、I don’t eat pork.” or “いいえ、I eat pork.” In this case, “はい” means “That’s true! As you said, I don’t eat pork,” and “いいえ’ means “That’s not true! Actually, I eat pork. I would have never said, ‘I don’t eat pork.’)

はい？: What? What did you say? (with different intonation)

では。: Well, then, I will do it. / Let’s do it. / Now, I'm ready.

私は応じた。「はい。では。」: I replied, “Okay, I will.”

She read the numbers, “Your blood pressure is 180 over 100.” I smiled, “That’s good!” 

彼女が数値を読み上げた。「はい、上が180、下が100です。」私は微笑んだ。「良いですね。」

彼女(かのじょ): she / her

数値 (すうち) : a numeric value

読む (よむ) : to read (verb)

上げる (あげる) : to raise (verb) / to lift something up (verb)

読み上げる (よみあげる) : to read aloud (verb) / You read it aloud.

読み上げた。: You have read it aloud. / You read it aloud. (past tense)

彼女が読み上げた。: She read it aloud. (past tense)

数値を読み上げた。: You read the numbers. (past tense)

彼女が数値を読み上げた。: She read the numbers.

はい: (Just a voice without a meaning.)

上 (うえ) : upper, higher, above

下 (した) : lower / below

80 (はちじゅう) : eighty

100 (ひゃく) : one hundred

180 (ひゃくはちじゅう) : one hundred eighty

私(わたし): I / my / me

微笑む (ほほえむ) : to smile (verb)

微笑んだ。(ほほえんだ) : You smiled.

私は微笑んだ。: I smiled.

良い (いい / よい) : good

良いですね。: That's good, isn't it? / That's sounds good!

She smiled back to me, “ I need to check it one more time. Okay, breathe slowly.” I took a deep breath, “How about now?” 

彼女も微笑んだ。「もういっかい測りますよ。はい、ゆっくり呼吸して下さい。」私は深呼吸した。「今度はどうですか？」

彼女 (かのじょ) : she/her

微笑む (ほほえむ) : to smile (verb)

微笑んだ。(ほほえんだ) : You smiled.

彼女が微笑んだ。/ She smiled.

彼女も微笑んだ。: She also smiled. / She smiled back to you.

私(わたし): I / my / me

看護師 (かんごし) : a nurse

言った。(いった) : You said.

看護師が言った。: The nurse said.もういっかい : one more time / again

測る (はかる) : to measure (verb)

測りますよ。(はかりますよ) : I will measure it, okay? (casual expression)

もういっかい測りますよ。: I will measure it again.

ゆっくり : slowly

呼吸 (こきゅう) : a breath

呼吸する : to breathe (verb)

呼吸してください。: Please, breathe.

はい、ゆっくり呼吸して下さい。: Okay, breathe slowly.

深呼吸 (しんこきゅう) : taking a deep breath (noun)

深呼吸する : to take a deep breath (verb)

深呼吸した。: You took a deep breath.

私は深呼吸した。: I took a deep breath.

今度 (こんど) : this time / the next time / now (depends on the context)

どうですか？ : How is it?

今度はどうですか？ : How about now?

傾げる (かしげる) : to tilt (verb)

首を傾げる : to cock your head when you don't understand something or there is a problem (verb)

良いと思う: You think it is good.

全然 (ぜんぜん) : any / at all / everything

問題 (もんだい) : a problem

無い (ない) : It is not here/there. / You don't have it.

問題無い。: There is no problem.

全然問題無い。: There is no problem at all. / Everything is okay.

全然大丈夫！(ぜんぜんだいじょうぶ！): No problem! / Everything is okay! / Don't worry about it! (Just memorize this expression as if it is one word.)

The nurse asked me, “By the way, what have you been doing?” I answered, “This is ‘ibuki,’ I'm a Hashijutsu master.” 

看護師が私に尋ねた。「ところで、さっきから何やってるんですか。」私は答えた。「これ、息吹ですよ。私は箸術の師範をしてるんです。」

看護師 (かんごし): a nurse

尋ねる (たずねる) : to ask someone a question (verb)

尋ねた。: You asked.

さっき : a little while ago / just a few minutes ago

さっきから : for quite a while / for some time / since a few minutes ago

何？(なに？) : What?

している : You are doing it.

やっている : you are doing it. (casual, spoken expression)

何やってるんですか？: What are you doing? (casual, spoken expression)

さっきから何やってるんですか？: What have you been doing? (since a few minutes ago)

答える (こたえる) : to answer

答えた。(こたえた) : You answered.

看護師は答えた。: The nurse answered.

息吹 (いぶき) : Ibuki (A special and unique breathing technique often used in karate practice)

これは息吹です。: This is Ibuki.

箸術 (はしじゅつ) : Hashijutsu (a Japanese martial art )

師範(しはん): a master, a teacher of a martial art such as Jujutsu, Karate, etc.

私はしています。: I am doing it.

箸術の師範 : a Hashijutsu master

私は箸術の師範です。: I am a Hashijutsu master.

私は師範をしています。: I am a master. 

私は箸術の師範をしています。: I am a Hashijutsu master. 

柔道 (じゅうどう) : Judo

私は柔道の師範をしています。: I am a Judo master.

私は箸術の師範をしています。: I am a Hashijutsu master.

私は箸術の師範をしてるんです。: I am a Hashijutsu master. (casual, spoken expression)
