1. A Hidden Martial Art

It was an extremely hot day in 2007. I was taking a nap on the carpet in my house. I felt my life was being threatened by a presence in the room. It seemed that something had stealthily entered. I strained my ears trying to hear what was making the noise. 

I slowly opened my eyes, turned my face to the right and then I saw him. Then, I jumped up from the couch and rushed to the kitchen to find a weapon. The first thing I grabbed was a pair of chopsticks.  

After a hard battle, I finally won a victory over my enemy. I picked him up with my chopsticks and chucked him out of the house. The enemy I fought was a giant centipede that looked as large as Hawaiian giant centipedes. 

I won the fight. However, I realized that my index finger was extremely worn and the skin was red. The problem was the length of the weapon. Yes, the chopsticks were too short compared to the enemy. That day, I founded a new martial art, and named it "Hashi-Jutsu. "

1. 秘伝の格闘術

其れは、2007年の、ある猛暑の日だった。私は自宅の絨毯の上で、昼寝をしていたとき、何者かの殺気に気付いていた。どうやら、何者かが密かに侵入したらしい。私は耳を欹て、その者の立てる音に意識を集中した。ゆっくりと目を開き、顔を右側に向けた時、奴が見えた。

私は寝床から飛び上がり、台所に駆け込み、ある武器を手にした。私が手に握っていたのは、その武器とは、一膳の箸だった。私は熾烈な闘いを経て、やっとの思いで敵に打ち勝った。私は箸で奴を屋外に摘み出した。闘った敵は、あのハワイアン・ジァイアント・センテピーディに匹敵する程の巨大な百足だった。

私は闘いに勝利した。しかし一方、私は人差し指に、深い痛手を負っていることに気がついた。そして皮膚は、赤く腫れ上がっていた。問題は、武器の長さに有った。そう、私の箸は敵よりも短かったのだ。その日、私は新しい格闘術を創始し、それを、「箸術」と名付けた。

秘伝 (ひでん) : hidden techniques, a secret, the mysteries (noun), a special technique or knowledge which is secretly taught to only one or limited students (noun)

秘伝の : hidden (adjective), secretly taught

其れは、2007年の、ある猛暑の日だった。私は自宅の絨毯の上で、昼寝をしていたとき、何者かの殺気に気付いていた。

It was an extremely hot day in 2007. I was taking a nap on the carpet in my house. I felt my life was being threatened by a presence in the room.

其れ(それ): it  (hiragana is usually used. Here, I intentionally used kanji to make the sentence more dramatic.

2007年(にせん ななねん): the year 2007, 2007 years

猛暑(もうしょ): fierce heat (noun)

猛暑の : extremely hot (adjective)

日(ひ): a day

ある日 : one day

ある猛暑の日 : an extremely hot day

気づく (きづく) : to notice, to realize, to feel that something is going on or happening

自宅(じたく): one's home, one's house, my/your/his/her home (depends on the context)

絨毯(じゅうたん):a carpet

上(うえ): bellow, upper, higher, on a surface

昼寝(ひるね): an afternoon nap

昼寝をする: to take a nap (verb), You take a nap.

殺気(さっき): an atmosphere of menace, the feeling that someone want to kill you

気付く(きづく): to feel something, to sense something

殺気に気付く : to feel that your life is being threatened by a presence

気づいた(きづいた): You felt, You sensed, You realized

It seemed that something had stealthily entered. I strained my ears trying to hear what was making the noise. I slowly opened my eyes, turned my face to the right and then I saw him. 

どうやら、何者かが密かに侵入したらしい。私は耳を欹て、その者の立てる音に意識を集中した。ゆっくりと目を開き、顔を右側に向けた時、奴が見えた。

どうやら: somehow, likely

何？(なに) : What?

者 (もの) : a person, someone who you are mentioning

何者？ (なにもの) : Who is he/her?

何者か (なにものか) : someone who has not been identified who he or she is

密かに(ひそかに): secretly, privately, quietly

侵入(しんにゅう): unlawful entry / invasion / entering into a room, etc. stealthily without a permission (noun)

侵入する: to stealthily enter a room, house or building (verb)

密かに侵入する : to stealthily enter someone's private area or property

侵入した。: You stealthily entered here/there.

何者かが侵入した。: Something or someone had entered into your private area without your permission.

密かに侵入した。: You have stealthily entered.

耳 (みみ) : a ear, ears

欹てる (そばだてる) : to prick up your ears (verb, poetic or old fashioned expression)

耳を欹てる: to strain your ears to hear the sound or noise (verb)

私は耳を欹てた。: I strained my ears.

私は耳を欹て、.... : I strained my ears and/then/so ......

その者 (そのもの) : someone who has already been mentioned

音 (おと) : a sound

立てる (たてる) : to stand something (verb), You stand it.

開く (ひらく) : to open (verb)

顔 (かお) : face

右側 (みぎがわ) : right side, toward right, on your right

向ける (むける) : to turn something toward a certain direction (verb)

向けた (むけた) : You turned it toward such a direction.

顔を向けた: You turned your face to it.

奴 (やつ) : one, a fellow, a guy (poetic but not polite)

見える(みえる): You can see it.

寝床(ねどこ): a surface that you sleep on, usually a bed or futon.

飛ぶ (とぶ) : to jump (verb)

上がる (あがる) : to go up (verb)

飛び上がる (とびあがる) : to jump up (verb)

上がった。(あがった) : You went up. 

私は飛び上がった。: I jumped up.

私は寝床から飛び上がった。: I jumped up from the couch.

起こす(おこす): to raise something, to wake someone up (verb)

台所(だいどころ): a kitchen

駆け込む(かけこむ): to run or rush into somewhere, to seek a shelter in a church, an NPO, etc. and hide yourself in it

駆け込み寺(かけこみでら): a Buddhist temple where you rush in and will stay for a period of time because you have been in a danger or hard situation in your real life, and the temple will protect you from someone, for example, your former husband who had committed violence against you. This expression can also be used as an idiom for a person who you will finally ask for help when you have been having a hard time for something which you could not solve yourself, so he or she is the last person who might be able to help you

駆け込んだ。(かけこんだ) : You rushed there.

台所に駆け込んだ。 : You rushed to the kitchen.

武器 (ぶき) : a weapon, tool or method for you to use when fighting. a method you use to solve a problem

手にする (てにする) : to pick up, to get, to grab something such as a tool

握る (にぎる): to hold something (verb)

百足だった。: It was a centipede.

赤 (あか) : red (noun)

赤く : in red color (adverb)

腫れ (はれ) : swelling (noun)

腫れる  : to swell (verb)

上がる (あがる) : to go up (verb)

赤く腫れ上がる : It swells up.

赤く腫れ上がっている。 : A part of your body is now inflamed and the skin of it is red.

The problem was the length of the weapon. Yes, the chopsticks were too short compared to the enemy. That day, I founded a new martial art, and named it Hashi-Jutsu.

問題は、武器の長さに有った。そう、私の箸は敵よりも短かったのだ。その日、私は新しい格闘術を創始し、それを、箸術と名付けた。

箸 (はし) : chopsticks

敵よりも : comparing to the enemy / than the enemy

短い (みじかい) : short

短かった。(みじかかった) : It was short.

敵よりも短い : It is shorter than the enemy.

私の箸は敵よりも短かい。: My chopsticks are too short compared to the enemy.
